Description: Pearl is a sixteen-year-old vampire... fond of blood, allergic to sunlight, and mostly evil... until the night a sparkly unicorn stabs her through the heart with his horn. Oops. Her family thinks she was attacked by a vampire hunter (because, obviously, unicorns don't exist), and they're shocked she survived. They're even more shocked when Pearl discovers she can now withstand the sun. But they quickly find a way to make use of her new talent. The Vampire King of New England has chosen Pearl's family to host his feast. If Pearl enrolls in high school, she can make lots of human friends and lure them to the King's feast—as the entrees. The only problem? Pearl's starting to feel the twinges of a conscience. How can she serve up her new friends—especially the cute guy who makes her fangs ache—to be slaughtered? Then again, she's definitely dead if she lets down her family. What's a sunlight-loving vamp to do? Review: Due to the title of this novel, I knew one thing: either this book would either be awful and cliched in the worst ways possible or great and somehow pull off putting all these random elements together. However, from the first page of this book, I knew it would be the latter. From the very first page, I was amazed by the spectacular world-building, excellent writing, and kick-ass female protagonist. There were many (vampire) cliches, but it was written in a way so that it wasn't annoying or scoff-worthy. Although there were a few parts that were predictable, there were other parts that completely took me by surprise and left me mind-blown. In fact, even when I thought I knew something, I was constantly second-guessing myself about it. This book has a great humor and I loved reading through the eyes of Pearl, a sadistic vampire who ends up learning how to deal with human emotions. Surprisingly, the book is written in third person. I say this is surprising because the author captured Pearl's voice so well that I didn't even notice it was written in third person until someone else pointed it out. When I picked up this book, I was not expecting for it to deal with issues such as what makes humans human and the importance of friendship. The more I read this book, the more I fell in love with it. In the end, I absolutely loved this book (more than I ever thought I would just by glancing at it). When I was finished with it, I was left with that warm, fuzzy feeling that one gets only after reading an exceptionally great book. Who knows, I might be overhyping this book a bit, but I read it at the perfect time possible for me to read it and I ended up loving it so much. I definitely recommend this book to vampire lovers and people who are interested in reading a book where the main character isn't necessarily a good person (like all the other vampires in this book) and that also holds a fantasy creature that isn't addressed in too many books. Read this book. You won't regret it. Rating: 5/5 |
